Migrate to the Garden State - New Jersey 2002

Activities

Based on the responses we received at the 2001 Regionals, we expect the activities to be very popular. Space is limited for some of them, and we will need to give a final headcount for buses and tickets well in advance.

Please register early to reserve your place! All activities are First Come, First Serve!

Thomas Edison Lab Tour & Mansion Open House **
For more than forty years the laboratory created by Thomas Alva Edison in West Orange, NJ had enormous impact on the lives of millions of people worldwide. Out of the West Orange laboratories came the motion picture camera, vastly improved phonographs & sound recordings, silent & sound movies, and the nickel-iron alkaline electric storage battery. Edison National Historic Site includes Edison's labs, offices, and the "Black Maria" (the first film studio). It provides a unique opportunity to experience important aspects of America's industrial, social and economic past, and to learn from the legacy of the world's best known inventor.

You will also have the opportunity to visit Thomas Edison's home at private "Open Houses" that the National Park Service has arranged for us. Glenmont is a 23 room Queen Anne-style mansion, containing many of the original furnishings. It is located just minutes from Edison's Lab on 15.5 acres in Llewellyn Park, America's first private, romantically landscaped, residential area (founded in 1857). It was the home of Thomas Edison and his wife from 1886 to 1931, and it is their final resting place. Both Mr. and Mrs. Edison are buried behind the house.

** Both tours to Thomas Edison's Lab & Mansion are full -- with waiting lists. We are pleased to announce that we have been able to schedule an additional tour to the Edison Lab for Saturday, June 29th. This will be a one hour tour of Edison's Lab complex, and will include his labs, office, and the "Black Maria" film studio. However, it will not include his mansion. The bus will leave at 12:30 pm and return to the hotel at 2:30 pm. There is a reduced cost of $13 per person for the new tour.

Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
Statue of Liberty - Located in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of international friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is one of the most universal symbols of political freedom and democracy. Ellis Island - Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 12 million immigrants who entered the United States through the port of New York were legally and medically inspected at Ellis Island. The Main Building on Ellis Island is now a museum dedicated to the history of immigration and the important role this island claimed during the mass migration of humanity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal (CRRNJ) - After being greeted by the Statue of Liberty, and processed at Ellis Island, immigrants purchased tickets and boarded trains at the historic CRRNJ Terminal to take them to their new homes throughout the United States.

Your visit to Liberty State Park will be self-paced. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the scenic park and attractions, and have lunch on your own at the cafeteria on-site. The early departure will give you an opportunity to take the first ferry to the Statue of Liberty -- which is required if you want a chance to go inside the statue!
